Foundations of Funny: A Stand-Up Comedy Workshop

The course will include:

watching and analyzing standup comedy,

learning how to generate bits,
-
and writing and polishing jokes.
We will also practice delivering what we write for an audience. This workshop will include feedback from instructor and peers through writing assignments you will come and deliver to class each week.
By the end of the course you will have generated 5 minutes of original material. The class will culminate in a final performance in front of an audience should you choose to participate in the show.
Featuring Instructor: Shawna Blake
Shawna Blake is a comedian, storyteller and educator based in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
She has been doing standup comedy for 11 years and has travelled all over performing in festivals, clubs and colleges. She has opened for amazing comics including Dave Attell, Jeff Ross, Michelle Wolf and more.
She produces Don’t Tell Comedy shows in the Tulsa area and her TedX talk “Laughing Matters: How to Find Your Funny” was published in 2021.
Blake teaches communication at Tulsa Community College because she loves a captive audience. When she is not performing or teaching, she is obsessed with her dog to a degree that’s been called “terrifying” and “disturbing” by others who haven’t met him.
This 6-week workshop will be held on the Wednesdays, October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, and November 5, 2025 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in person at OSU-Tulsa.
Registration for this workshop will close at 5:00 pm on Monday, September 29, 2025.
