This course introduces the techniques of digital video and audio production, including basic
terminology and the operation of cameras, lenses, lighting, audio recording, and digital editing
equipment.
Through lectures, screenings, and hands-on exercises, we will explore the relevant production
aesthetics and practices of digital filmmaking.
Students shall be able to apply knowledge gained from class into filmmaking, television, podcasts,
and marketing and learn how to create their projects economically.
COURSE GOALS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After taking this course, students shall demonstrate a firm grasp and understanding of:
- The basic technical skills and fundamentals involved in digital video and audio
- The overall creative process, including pre-production, production and post-production
- Pre-Production paperwork including shot lists, overheads and call sheets
- Aesthetic choices that impact composition, style, genre, and production design
- Proper screenplay format, character development, goal cycles, act structure, and writing scripts for the short film format
- Editing and the use of non-linear editing software
- Critical assessment and the ability to evaluate the work of themselves and their peers from an analytical perspective
- These micro-budget filmmaking topics shall also be explored:
- How to create an efficient cost-saving and quality film
- How to save money on set through planning
- How to create an effective marketing plan
